SD Activities Group Spent $5,300 On Lawyer So Far

The South Dakota board that governs high school activities has spent more than budgeted on its legal counsel and lobbyist because of a push by the Legislature to hold the group to the state's open records policies.

Executive Director Wayne Carney says $800 over the $4,500 budgeted for the group's lawyer partially results from new policies on international and transgender students.

The High School Activities Association lobbied against a new transparency law effective July 1. It adopted its own internal policy promoting openness.

The association spent more money than it made in four months since last July. Carney says the reserve fund acts as a cushion and similar groups in other states have also seen revenues drop.

The association discussed the first nine months of the fiscal year Wednesday.
