School Bus Safety

Sioux Falls, SD

With school just around the corner, buses are gearing up for another year. We stopped by School Bus Inc. in Sioux Falls for a reminder of what you need to know when you see a big yellow bus on the road.

With 115 buses in the fleet, School Bus Inc. has a lot to do before the school year arrives. That includes general maintenance, and teaching drivers how to handle the kids on the bus.

"Training involves first aid. How to watch the students. Keep track of the students. Make sure that they don't cross behind the bus. Always make sure they cross in front of the bus if they have to cross the street. Try to make sure they keep the students back on the sidewalk," School Bus Inc. Manager, Jim Shafer said.

It's not just kids who need to remember the rules of the road. Other drivers can be ticketed if they pass a school bus with flashing yellow or red lights on. But the placement of the lights does make a difference.

"If anything is flashing down below the windows of the bus, it's just the bus is stopping or at a railroad track or doing something different. The thing that I try to tell people is, any time the lights are flashing above the windows, that's when that bus is going to be stopping and picking up or dropping off students," Shafer said.

Shafer says if other drivers just keep their distance and watch out for kids, it will really help school bus drivers which are still in high demand, days before the school bells ring.

"We're still short drivers yet, so we can use a few drivers yet. But other than that, we believe we're ready," Shafer said.

School Bus Inc. is looking for about 10 more drivers for the school year.
