Report Raises Questions About Background Checks For BIE Employees

The Bureau of Indian Education is not doing enough to make sure employees who work with children are going through background checks, according to a new report from the Office of Inspector General.

The report found four areas that the Bureau of Indian Education is failing when it comes to performing proper background checks.

Officials say the agency is not making sure background checks are complete or reinvestigating staff within a timely manner.

The report also says there is confusion over who is responsible for the background checks and that the system is outdated.

As of December 2016, more than 1,000 employees had not undergone a reinvestigation after five years.

The Inspector General offered 11 recommendations. BIE replied to the report saying it agrees with the recommendations and has already started implementing the changes.

There are 21 BIE schools in South Dakota.
