Construction Of New Theater At NSU May Be Delayed

Aberdeen, SD

The addition of a black box theater at Northern State University may have to be delayed as the proposed construction project for the college's arts center is 20 percent over budget.

The overhaul of the Johnson Fine Arts Center is $4.5 million over budget, which has forced officials to downsize the project.

The building committee will meet with the architects within two weeks to make a final decision.

The newspaper reports that the theater and music departments were counting on the additional space for performances.

Michael Skyles is a professor of applied voice, music appreciation and opera at NSU. He says he's disappointed. Skyles says some spaces have had to be modified in the past for certain shows that require a black box.
