College Students Pick S. Dakota For Spring Break

Forget Florida, Hawaii or Mexico. Some college students are choosing South Dakota for their spring break destination.

Instead of sipping Mojitos by the beach in their swimsuits, the students are taking part in service projects aimed at helping the state's many American Indian reservations.  Students from nearly 10 colleges, including Northwestern University and the University of Michigan, are helping with maintenance work and gardening at a youth center on the Cheyenne River reservation.

On the Pine Ridge reservation, a group of students from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, volunteered at Porcupine Day School during their spring break last month.

The college students learned about Lakota culture and helped tutor the elementary students. Vanderbilt senior Brian Alosco says the weeklong trip was an eye-opening experience.
