South Dakota's largest charitable hunger relief organization says it will provide food to a record 3,600 children this fall through its Backpack Program.
The program gives backpacks of food to children in need to eat over the weekends, when they don't have access to school lunch programs.
It's in its eighth year. It helped about 3,500 children in the Sioux Falls region last year. That was up from 200 children in 2007.
Program coordinator Allison Struck says it costs more than $500,000 to operate the program. Feeding South Dakota is looking for people to contribute $150 to sponsor one child for the school year.
