The official move-in day for Augustana College students is August 31 but around 200 are already on campus. With more than 1,500 others on the way, Augie is getting residence halls ready.
Parts of Augie's campus are coming alive as students begin to ship in and get back to school. While athletes make up a majority of the people showing up early, many others will arrive in the next few weeks and freshmen will stay in one of two residence halls.
"We really emphasize the first year experience. 97 percent of our freshmen class will live in two residence halls, this building Bergsaker Hall, which we're in right now, and Solberg Hall to the immediate west," Dean of Students Jim Bies said.
The rooms are ready to go and summer renovations are complete. Bies says the college is doing its best to make the 1960s facilities more comfortable.
"What we did is we put in carpet in all the hallways. We used to have tile floors. Noise reduction, a little more comfort and it looks more pleasing," Bies said.
Bies likes having almost every freshman living on campus and says this year's orientation for first-year students will last all year long. It's a more lengthy approach and one he hopes helps freshmen retain information.
"Developing community. There's a class identity with that first-year experience. To the extent possible, we try to provide as much of a common experience as we possibly can," Bies said.
Classes won't begin until September 4 but 500 students will be on campus within the next seven to 10 days.
