Swine Shown In 4-H Competition Creating Mess In SD

WHITE LAKE, SD

A swine shown at a 4-H competition is creating quite a mess in White Lake.

State 4-H officials are asking the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals to throw out a lower court's decision to let a 16-year-old girl to compete in 4-H after she'd been banned by the group's ethics committee in October.

The ban stemmed from Bayley Kroupa's showing of a swine at the 2011 South Dakota State Fair. The swine previously competed in the Missouri State Fair - a violation of the 4-H code of ethics.

4-H officials say allowing the girl to compete would hurt its reputation and sanction the "unfair conduct."

Kroupa's family has filed suit asking for $850,000 for alleged humiliation, punitive damages and civil rights violations.
