North Dakota Denied FEMA Assistance For Drought

Federal authorities have denied North Dakota's request for disaster funding as the state faces ongoing drought conditions.

FEMA rejected the request from state leader earlier this week. North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says that there wasn't relief for farmers and ranchers in that type of assistance.

"It wasn't going to do any good for agriculture," Goehring said. "There were some people out there pushing for presidential disaster, pushing the governor for presidential disaster, thinking that there would be some relief for farmers and ranchers. There really wasn't."

Goehring said that the state has filed for assistance through other agencies.

Ag producer Wage Staigle says that ranchers and farmers in North Dakota are always prepared for the worst.
