Apples at Hoversten Orchards are growing and nearly every day another type of apple becomes ripe. Pat Coughlin, the manager at Hoversten Orchards has been picking ripe apples for a few weeks.
And sagging branches around the orchards is one indication that the apples are a bumper crop this year. Coughlin says the weather this year couldn't have been more perfect.
"Last year was the biggest one we had until then, and this year is our biggest one yet, so what's going to happen next year I have no idea," Coughlin said.
Each week until the middle of October, he says about four or five different kinds of apples become ripe each week. A must have for many families this time of year, the Honeycrisp, becomes ripe soon and Coughlin says that is when business booms.
"Pretty soon, a week from now, Honeycrisp will be ready to go and that's when they will really hit us, we're going to be real busy then. In fact, our business will triple actually," Coughlin said.
With the plentiful crop, he and his wife expect to stay busy through the rest of the fall season, selling apples, cider, and making sure the best apples come off the trees.
"By Friday and from then on, clean until about the end of October, it's going to be pretty wild around here," Coughlin said.
