Although the castle is what comes to the minds of many when talking about Sanford Children's, the first phase of the hospital actually opened in June of 2006.
That's when several tiny babies moved into the Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It's not located in the castle, but the patients in the 58-bed unit still receive high-quality care using the latest technology and research. Like the new Children's Hospital, the NICU also has some special amenities for the babies and their families alike---including Giraffe beds that give the babies a temperature-controlled environment, noise minimizing alarms, and private family suites.
