Access to the morning-after pill is at the heart of the debate over South Dakota's proposed abortion ban. But for women looking to get emergency contraception at an emergency room, there's something they should know.
Monica Huber with Sioux Valley Trauma 5 says, "You're not going to get a prescription for that here, if you're not a rape victim." Deb Fischer-Clemens with Avera Health says, "No. If it's unprotected sex, our protocol is very clear that it's sexual assault and rape."
At this point, emergency contraception may only be available through an acute care clinic or doctor's office. The drug is expected to be released for over-the-counter sales to women age 18 and older later this year.
CLARIFICATION: After broadcast of this story, KELOLAND News was informed that the policy at Sioux Valley Hospital is decided on an individual basis by the attending physician.
