But Thune Earmarks Are Okay
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/30/2008 10:42 PM (2008 Election, Congress, Gov. Sarah Palin, RSS Feed, Sen. John McCain, Sen. John Thune)

In this latest constituent email, Sen. John Thune crows about getting some special defense projects funded for South Dakota:
On September 27, 2008, the National Defense Authorization bill for Fiscal Year 2009 was sent to the White House for a presidential signature and enactment into law.  The bill authorizes funding for the Department of Defense and the national security programs of the Department of Energy.  The bill also provides a 3.9 percent pay raise for all military personnel and includes several South Dakota defense-related projects.
But wait.  I thought these earmarks were bad.  That’s what Sen. Thune’s good friend Sen. John McCain says.  And his little friend Gov. Sarah Palin.

I’m not complaining that Sen. Thune got some pork for South Dakota.  I’m just a little surprised that the top of his Party’s ticket just thinks what John does for us all is so bad.

Blame Gays for the Economic Crisis
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/29/2008 10:35 PM (2008 Election, Economy, GLBT Rights, RSS Feed)

Why can't Wall Street get its act together?

It's because of the gays, you silly goose!

So says some on the "Christian" Right.

Some excerpts from an interesting post from On Top Magazine:
“Our crisis is a symptom, not the cause,” writes Michael Heath. “I am not saying I know whether

In a September 25th blog post titled The Nation Will Right Itself If It Fixes Sex, Christian Civil League of Maine Executive Director Michael Heath writes that the financial crisis facing Wall Street is a symptom of America's sinful sexual culture, including the acceptance of gay unions.

“Our crisis is a symptom, not the cause,” writes Michael Heath. “I am not saying I know whether this financial crisis is God's judgment or not. It is not for me to know that definitively.”

And:

Krikorian suggests the big bank failed because it was too accommodating to minorities, including gays,

A related post by Center for Immigration Studies Executive Director Mark Krikorian at the National
Review's website pushes a similar theme, this time focusing on Friday's failure of WaMu.

Krikorian suggests the big bank failed because it was too accommodating to minorities, including gays, African-Americans and Hispanics.

Yup, just like causing your marriage to fail, it's gays' fault that our economy stinks.  Makes perfect sense to me.

Corn Farmers Who Support McCain: An Oxymoron
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/28/2008 10:55 AM (2008 Election, Agriculture, Ethanol, RSS Feed, Sen. John McCain)

Attention KELOLAND corn farmers.

If you are voting for Sen. John McCain, you are voting against your own self interest.

If you are resident of a small rural town that needs jobs and prosperous famers, you are voting against your self interest.

In Friday's Presidential Debate, McCain again emphasized that one of the first things he would cut to get the federal budget under control would be ethanol subsidies.

Just wanted to make sure you knew what you were doing to yourself.

Video: Yes on 10's New Ad--Good on One Point Only
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/28/2008 10:39 AM (2008 Election, IM 10, Open Government, RSS Feed)

This ad ought to make my young Republican friend Pat Powers at the South Dakota War Junior College go beserk.

I think the ad is effective but misleading.  I agree with the problems with no-bid contracts and the crony capitalism that it attacks.  But there is so much more craziness to the measure that actually takes away citizens' rights to redress its government that the small good it might do is outweighed by the new, larger harm it causes.

Anyway, watch the ad and make your own conclusions.

Oh, and some other things that makes you go "hmmm."  First, they call school board members "trustees."  I've never heard that term used in South Dakota.  Second, they use a lot of generic photos and videos, including a shot of a capitol and lobbyists that I don't think is in the Capitol in Pierre.  Lastly, they placed the ad on You Tube UK rather than the "American" version of the site: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Aaq00osDpMo

Where Do SD Cougars Hunt Their Prey?
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/26/2008 8:24 PM (humor, RSS Feed, Men & Women)

I want to talk about stalking cougars in South Dakota for a minute.

No, not in the way that my young Republican friend Pat Powers over at the South Dakota War Junior College obsesses about our large, furry, feline friends in the Black Hills (and sometimes beyond).

No, I’m talking about cougars as in single women in their 30s-50s on the prowl for rich guys.  (That obviously puts me out on two counts: A. Married.  B. Not remotely rich.)

They are portrayed on TV by the likes of Kim Cattrell of Sex and the City.

One of my Kansas blogging colleagues recently had an interesting post about all the cougar lairs in Johnson County, Kansas.  Which made me think, where do the South Dakota cougars lie (lay?) in wait for their unsuspecting quarry?

Put your knowledge, surveillance, and better yet, first-hand hunting (or hunted) stories in the comments.

Perhaps Kevin Woster from Take It Outside will now also devote some space—and advice—to this new and growing area of hunting.

Yes, I am easily amused.

Bruce Halverson Staging 2008 Election Comeback?
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/25/2008 10:11 PM (2006 Election, 2008 Election, humor, RSS Feed, Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls City Elections, Bruce Halverson)

I'm driving down River Boulevard in Sioux Falls and what do I see along the side of the road?

A Halverson for Mayor yard sign, as in Dr. Bruce Halverson, who ran for mayor of Sioux Falls in April of 2006.

I thought it was pretty funny, putting out a campaign sign for someone not running for anything this fall.

Then again, I'm easily amused.

Was Miranda Mirandized?
Posted by: Todd Epp - 09/24/2008 10:23 PM (Civil Rights, Crime, humor, Law, Law Enforcement, Police, RSS Feed)

There's a Black Hills area murder trial featuring a defendant named Chari Miranda.

Of course everyone has heard of the Miranda case (also named after a defendant named Miranda) whereby the U.S. Supreme Court said police have to give criminal defendants certain warnings about waiving their rights against self-incrimination.  This is known as the Miranda Warning, or Miranda Rights or in police parlance, Mirandizing the defendant.

It's also a staple of all TV cop shows.

So, wouldn't it be ironic if the cops didn't give Miranda rights to someone named Miranda?  (I don't think this is an issue in the case.  I am just postulating for humor's sake.)

Imagine the arrest:

"Hey, Miranda!  Here are your Miranda warnings.  But I don't have to tell you that as you're already Mirandized, right?  Born that way, huh?"
