Union County citizen activist Carolyn Carlson continues to ask some hard questions about the presence of human remains in the proposed Hyperion refinery site.

Whether you are for or against the project, knowing if there people buried there and dealing with it in a respectful manner is only right.

Here's some of Carolyn's recent epistles.

A small victory- Hyperion's Corky Frank told local tv & press news while I & Jay Vincent watched that there were no graves outside the widely known Brule Creek cemetery. Vincent had just slipped up (MY take) and confessed to me he knew Hyperion had received a report generated by a US Geological Survey walk-through crew who claimed to find 4 small family cemeteries (associated with homesteads prior to the establisment of the community cemetery system). The children mentioned below are not part of that report,as Harknesses are 'holdouts'. Dr. Larry Bradley of University of SD's Anthropology

program informed me over a year ago that of SD's settlement records at the department of Census in DC, all records were destroyed by fire EXCEPT those recording homesteaders of Union County. That documentation can be used to establish identities of individuals known to be buried at the 4 small family cemeteries found by the walk through survey. Dr. Bradley had me go to USD's Law library to look up state laws concerning graves, human remains, etc. & they weren't that complicated. I thought 2 areas were relevent, one concerning disturbing remains for purpose of financial gain being a felony, another protecting those graves (The Union co. State's Attorney verbally confronted me and a native american associate who announced to the public & commissioners at the Union Co Courthouse at a public meeting, demanding to know where any graves were located that we knew of, we later found out he is part of the committee on economic development that had cast the wide net that attracted Hyperion's interest).

Good morning... I thought you may be interested to know that the burial site of the babies has been numbered and will be recorded. I have been working with Bill Ranney on this. Are you familiar with him? Also at his first visit he was accompanied by Nancy Carlson. Any relation? ch
