Sarah Palin Says, "Stop The World, You Betcha, I Want To Get Off!"
Posted by: Todd Epp - 07/03/2009 4:00 PM (2008 Election, Gov. Sarah Palin, Republican Scandals, RSS Feed)

So why is Gov. Sarah Palin really stepping down?

Is there a yet announced health problem? Another scandal yet to surface? Are there family issues she needs to tend to? That's she's just fed up with meeting other people's expectations?

Babe that she is, I've been a harsh critic of hers. I don't think she's particularly bright, she's a lousy public speaker, and she has an even thinner skin about public criticism than I do.

She doesn't ring sincere. And maybe even she's figured that out.

Sarah Palin - Bear SkinImage by smiteme via Flickr

And why announce on a 4th of July weekend Friday to try and bury the story (or take out the trash). That might work for a lot of other politicians but not someone who has just been the Republican nominee for Vice President.

I don't wish Gov. Palin any ill will. And if she has health or family issues to take care of, it is a brave move.

But if there is the proverbial other shoe to drop, then stick a fork in her political career. I'm sure there will be much more to come out in the coming days about what is really causing Sarah Palin to want to stop the world to try and get off.

Jeremy Brunner's Spoken--Again--In Court
Posted by: Todd Epp - 07/02/2009 2:40 PM (Crime, Law, Robert Leroy Anderson)

The case before mine in federal court this morning was Jeremy Brunner pleading guilty to violating his supervised release in a counterfeiting case.

Brunner, as you may remember, was instrumental in breaking open the Robert Leroy Anderson cases. Anderson told him stuff in prison about the murders and abductions and Brunner told the authorities.

It was a tremendously good thing Jeremy did back then. But his life has remained one of difficulties, mostly self inflicted.

Anyway, I hope he gets is life together and stays out of jail.

Hey South Dakotan's, We're Only Moderately Fat!
Posted by: Todd Epp - 07/01/2009 10:49 AM (Health, RSS Feed)

According to Trust for America's Health, we're a moderately chubby bunch of fatsos here in South Dakota.

Our adults are the 20th fattest in the nation (here it would be good to be 50th in a category, for once), with 26.9% percent of us being obese. Nebraska is tied with us. Too much cornfed Cornhuskers, I guess.

All the surrounding states are lower than us. Montana is way better, with 22.7% of their adults being obese and coming in at 43d fattest (or 7th skinniest) in the USA. Must be all those slim cowboys and girls in Big Sky Country.

But we're nowhere as fat as Mississippians. Nearly a 1/3 of them are big fatties and they are the fattest in the nation. Too many grits.

Anyway, we could also stand to lose some weight, myself included. Get off the couch, push away from the table, and let's be 50th in something good for once, South Dakota!

Al Franken Is A Big Fat U.S. Senator!*
Posted by: Todd Epp - 06/30/2009 9:48 PM (2008 U.S. Senate Race, Minnesota, RSS Feed, Sen. Al Franken)

Meet your new U.S. Senator, Minnesota--comedian, satirist (a good precurser to being a politician) and writer, Al Franken.

Congratulations, Stuart Smalley. And help keep the Senate Obamafied!

*I don't think Sen. Franken is fat, it was just too good of a play on his Rush Limbaugh book to pass up.

Regional Soccer Championships Reveal Infrastructure, Elitism Issues
Posted by: Todd Epp - 06/29/2009 11:29 PM (Economic Development, Economy, Quality of Life, RSS Feed, Soccer, Tourism)

In most of the world, soccer is a game of the poor--of the ghetto, the bario, the village square.

In Sioux Falls, it is the game of the elite from afar.

I say this as an absolute lover of soccer and someone who coaches and referees youth and adult soccer in this community. I want our soccer programs to be good and I want our kids and adults who play to have a great experience.

KELOLAND and the Argus Leader hinted at the problems with lodging at the recently complete USYSA Midwest Regional Championship. And my buddy Scott Ehrisman at South Dacola takes it a lot farther--and a lot better--about the problems that the lack of motel rooms had not only on the tournament but on how it reveals serious problems for Sioux Falls if it wants to attract other big events.

Frankly, Scott's posting is an excellent example of citizen journalism. He has good information and asks some very tough questions. The Argus Leader and the other media in the city could take a hint.

I tried to add the following in the comments to Scott's posting that are more soccer related.

Scott:

This is one of the best posts you've had on any subject and brings to light some severe problems SF has if it is going to go to "the next level."

The Regional Tournament in many ways was a fiasco even for those of us who love youth soccer in SF. There were at least two instances I know of that the city would let rec games go on because of "wet field conditions" in April and May. Both days were sunny and great to play. The city was more concerned about keeping Yankton Trail's pitches pristine for the "$10M economic impact" elite teams in than letting the taxpayers' kids play soccer on a sunny Saturday. Believe me, the fields were completely playable.

Even Dakota Gold got screwed over by the city on the Yankton Trail fields for their tournament the week before the Regional. There had been some rain that Friday but the city again said there were "wet field conditions." The Friday YT games were moved to 7 a.m. the next day. People from Pierre, Aberdeen, the Twin Cities, and elsewhere didn't find out until they arrived at their fields.

The city didn't pull the plug until 3 p.m. and games were set to begin at 5 p.m.  I didn't even find out until I got to the field and I'm a local assistant coach and ref. The DG people were steamed. Again, the city thought it more important to keep the fields perfect for the Regional and screwed over people from Sioux Falls and the five state area and Canada.

To add injury to insult, the city failed to open the bathrooms up at YT and Tomar for the new 7 a.m. games. Not only did I end up refereeing a game with a full bladder and colon, I can't tell you how many kids and parents thought they could hit the facilities before their now early games. Again, this was unexcusable and a terrible way to treat visitors. I talked to a number of people who were deeply offended that not only did they have to waste an extra day in Sioux Falls then have to get up early, they couldn't even use the public bathrooms. I was embarassed for our community at such rude treatment of our guests.

They were also crying for volunteers. I don't know how many emails I got from the SFSA and other groups begging for volunteers. Non-elite club and rec teams, players, and coaches get treated like crap most of the year by the elite teams then they want us to volunteer at their big dance. Then they can't understand why people won't help.

The hotel room situation is unexcusable. I've faced similar problems when Aberdeen hosts the state soccer tournaments. No rooms. But at least they open up the NSU dorms for summer tournaments. Rapid City has no such problems when they host a major tournament even during tourist season.

I want to see tourism, soccer, and Sioux Falls grow and prosper. But if I were commuting from SUX (Sioux City) to play a once in lifetime tournament, I'd be major ticked off. That's not a way to treat people you've invited and recruited to your community. We have to actually be able to pull off these events, not cobble them together and just pick people's pockets.

Gay Marriage To Blame For GOP Pols' Marital Problems
Posted by: Todd Epp - 06/28/2009 9:23 PM (Culture, GLBT Rights, Republican Scandals, Gov. Mark Sanford)

The Rightwingers are right. Gay marriage is destroying the sanctity of different sex marriages--Republican office-holders' marriages that is.

Mark Sanford, governor of South Carolina, seen...Image via Wikipedia

And Vermont and Iowa are the most blame worthy as both of these former paragons of moral virtue now allow Adam and Steve the holy bonds of matrimony? They were obviously the tipping point.

Since their allowance or passage of gay marriage in 2009, Sen. John Ensign and Gov. Mark Sanford have admitted affairs.

Obviously, I jest. Gay marriage has little to do with the poor saps' pants monster problems--or much of anything else that goes on in society.

Frankly, I don't care what these politicans do in their personal lives. That's between them and their families. And no one, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Communisty, secular humanist, or whatever is perfect or without missteps or bad choices in their lives.

But when you go around preachin' and boastin' moral superiority but you're you're just a garden variety sinner, maybe you should keep your yap shut about how much better you are than everyone else. I'm just sayin'.

And maybe worry less about whether LGBT couples can marry and keep your own homes fires burning a little stronger with the missus.

We're KooKoo For CocoaPuffs Over Jacko
Posted by: Todd Epp - 06/28/2009 7:57 AM (Celebrities, Media, Michael Jackson, Music, RSS Feed)

Ok, I get it.

Michael Jackson was a pop sensation.

But the media coverage is crazy. He's getting as much or more TV coverage as the late President Gerald R. Ford received.

Unfortunately, Jerry was just a solid, decent man and the leader of the Free World. That's obviously less important than a mutant singer with an alleged thing for little boys.

Jay Trobec Waxes Political
Posted by: Todd Epp - 06/26/2009 10:32 PM (Bloggers, Jay Trobec, KELOLAND News, RSS Feed, Weather)

SD's Most Enlightened Non-Woman goes after KELOLAND Chief Meteorologist Jay Trobec today for Jay's comments about Pres. Barack Obama getting a pass from the Washington MSM.

I had no clue Jay was a Righty, but I guess it's not too surprising considering the Lundified ground from which he springs.

On the other hand, Jay has always been nothing but friendly to me, he's an accomplished weather dude, he comes from a political family, and he's a soccer referee God in the area as a retired Grade 5.

I don't have my panties all in a knot like SDMENW does that JTro actually has opinions, even ones I don't agree with. As long as Jay lets me know when a tornado is heading down Grand Avenue in Harrisburg, I really don't care.

And most of Jay's blog is actually about weather wonk stuff.

Who knew Jay had a blog?

Eventually, all Americans will have a blog. Jay's just ahead of the curve.

Is Sen. Thune Hunkalicious?
Posted by: Todd Epp - 06/25/2009 9:55 AM (humor, RSS Feed, Sen. John Thune)

That raging liberal online rag the Huffington Post has named our own junior U.S. Senator--John "McDreamy" Thune--as the 5th Sexiest U.S. Senator.

You can vote your approval or disapproval.

{{Potd/-- (en)}}Image via Wikipedia

I hope SD's Most Enlightened Non-Woman and his DW Fireflies give the HuffPo as much holy hell as they gave me a few weeks ago about "objectifying." Or does that only apply to women and not Republican men?

BTW, I think Sen. Thune is a handsome fellow.

(Hat tip to one of MSB's loyal female readers.)
