The deadline is looming for a federal program meant to help TV owners. The federal DTV converter box coupon program is coming to an end just days from now. And the little voucher could make a big difference in the pocketbook.
Even five months after the digital TV conversion, Karl's TV & Appliance manager Tom Johnson continues to handle questions from consumers about how to get a DTV converter box.
"Most everybody at the time of conversion got the box for primary TVs. Now we're seeing a lot of for secondary TVs -- in the work shop, or basement, or sewing room," Johnson said.
For TV owners who still have DTV converter box coupons, you only have a little time left to use them.
"You need to be utilizing that sometime between and next Monday. After Monday, the government will no longer authorize that card for payment to a retailer," Johnson said.
Most converter boxes cost anywhere between $49 and $69 dollars, but the coupon card will knock $40 off that price.
If you still want to use a converter coupon and don't already have one, you're probably out of luck.
"The coupons that are out there are the only ones out there. The government stopped issuing them," Johnson said.
But Johnson is hoping the ones that are out there, are put to good use.
