The switch to digital TV has taken place but the government predicts about 2 million Americans were not prepared for the deadline.

The process of replacing the analog signal with digital started when President Bush signed the Deficit Reduction Act into law in February of 2006. The bill gave TV stations and households three years to prepare. But when that deadline arrived, it took an act of Congress to extend it.

Most TV stations, including KELO-TV were prepared to pull the plug on our analog signal on February 17, 2009, the original deadline. Many stations decided to make the move at that time, even though Congress extended the deadline until June 12, 2009.

“The extension is something that was done in response to I think some of the consumer groups who were concerned about making the sure the transition went smoothly and that everybody around the country understood what the new environment would be like," Thune said.

In February, an estimated 6.5 million households weren't ready for the transition to DTV. The Federal Communication Commission estimates that number has been reduced to just more than 2 million.

"But I think South Dakota has taken all the steps, is adequately prepared, and I'm hopeful things will go smoothly," Thune said.

And early indicators show the transition has gone smoothly, and judging by the lack of phone calls, the picture is much clearer for many more households across KELOLAND.

If you have any questions about the transition, or if you still need to purchase a converter box, the government will help you pay for it. But the $40 voucher program expires at the end of July. You can register by visiting our special DTV page at KELOLAND.com.
