Yankton School Superintendent Sentenced For DUI

The school superintendent in Yankton has been sentenced for drunken driving.

Joseph Gertsema was fined $350 and ordered to pay $170 in court costs. His driver's license was suspended for 30 days.

Gertsema said after Tuesday's hearing that he was glad the ordeal was over and that he looked forward to spending Christmas with his family.

Gertsema was arrested Oct. 7 at a Highway Patrol checkpoint near Vermillion. He pleaded guilty to first-offense drunken driving.

Gertsema recently announced that he is resigning at the end of next June, after nearly two dozen years as superintendent. He said the decision has nothing to do with his arrest.
