Woman Protests Salem Gentlemen's Club

Drugs, alcohol and nude women .... these sound like things you would find in a big city strip club. But they're not... according to one woman who says you can find them right here in KELOLAND. And she wants the Race Horses Gentlemen's Club in Salem, South Dakota to shut down.

The Race Horses Gentlemens Club opened on May 23rd in Salem as a juice bar. Two weeks later the club closed its doors but was back in business shortly after that. The county says the area where the club sits is zoned as agricultural. But the club owner says it's been a commercial site for many years. The case is being decided in court. But one woman doesn't want to wait until a judicial decision is made. She's protesting the club. Because she has a friend who works there, the protestor does not want her identity revealed. So we'll call her "Sue".

The building is suppose to house a juice bar and exotic dancing. But one woman says there's more than that going on in the Race Horses Gentlemens Club in Salem.

Sue says, "What they're doing is encouraging acts of prostitution, they're encouraging drug dealing, alcohol."

And Sue says she's seen it all. Even though it's a juice bar, she's watched people come out of the club, fill a pop can up with alcohol and go back into the building.

Sue says, "We cannot allow nude juice bars in the community. We need to stop them before they get there foot in the door. It's degrading for women and it's immoral."

And Sue says the club is "no joke" and she wants it closed. She says, "I put an ad out in the paper, in the shopping news and we are hoping that a lot of people come and respond to the ad. We're going to picket."

Sue says she and whoever joins her will picket peacefully with signs. She plans to not talk to the customers who enter the building. But Sue and any other protestors will let it be known, they don't like the activities going on inside.

Sue says, "People have got to open their mouths and speak and let other people know like the state's attorney, the legislature, we've got to get laws into effect to stop these nude juice bars because they're happening all over."

Sue says she's tried to talk to the owner but hasn't gotten anywhere, that's why she's picketing. The protest is Saturday night starting at 8 in front of the Race Horses Gentlemen's Club. We were unable to contact the club's owner. The state's attorney says a court date for a decision on the club is set for October 16th. If it's determined the club is violating zoning laws it will be shut down.
