First Legislative Coffee Of The Year Held In Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

On Saturday, constituents gathered at the Holiday Inn in downtown Sioux Falls for the first legislative coffee during the 88th legislative session.

People in the audience submitted their questions about different bills the legislators were seeing during this session.

At Saturday's event, eleven lawmakers from across the aisle from district 6, 11, 12 and 15 answered questions.

Education, Medicaid and the budget were just some of the topics discussed. However, there was one hot topic at the meeting. That was the School Sentinel Bill.

This bill would give school districts the ability to decide if certain teachers or other personnel could carry guns on school grounds.

"The total purpose is to give local control and give schools the chance to do something to protect the kids if that is what they want to do," District 12 Rep. Hal Wick said.

"Partnerships exists in our community and can be made all over the state between schools and law enforcement and it seems very heavy handed to me," District 15 Rep. Karen Soli said.

The next legislative coffee is set for next Saturday at the Downtown Holiday Inn at 10:00 am. Lawmakers from district 9, 13 and 14 will be in the hot seat to answer questions from the public.
