Sanford Health has taken over the Sioux Falls-based biotech company Hematech, Inc. and its 20,000 square foot laboratory and office space in southern Sioux Falls.
The company was founded in Maryland in 1998 to produce antibodies for humans in genetically engineered cattle. Hematech formed a joint venture with Trans Ova Genetics in Sioux Center, IA, in 2003 to fulfill Hematech's animal needs and Trans Ova will continue that work for the newly named Sanford Applied Biosciences, LLC.
The acquisition expands on Sanford Health's growing research infrastructure.
"We are excited about the expertise Hematech researchers bring to Sanford Research," Sanford Health Senior Executive Vice President Dave Link said in a statement. "For more than a decade, Hematech has been conducting cutting-edge research in Sioux Falls. By coming together, we believe we can build on Hematech's expertise and technology and bring about new solutions to serious health issues."
