Water Main Break Sends Drinking Water Into River
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The city of Sioux Falls says approximately two million gallons of drinking water was lost into the Big Sioux River during a large water main break.

The Water Division responded to a 20-inch water main break near Falls Park in the early morning hours of January 1.  An emergency team was able to locate and stop the release of the treated water into the river.

Following the break, three field environmental assessments have been done on the Big Sioux River by the Public Works Environmental Division.  The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office was also notified.
