This weekend Sanaa's Restaurant in downtown Sioux Falls is putting on its largest fundraiser for the fourth year in a row. It's become so important that this year that the owner is taking it one step further.
The sound of a knife chopping away is a familiar one in Sanaa's. And come this weekend, there will be even more noise in the restaurant as they prepare for their biggest fundraiser.
"Usually we are closed on Saturdays for dinner. But this Saturday we are having a fundraiser for the food bank, Feeding South Dakota," restaurant owner Sanaa Abourezk.
This is not just any fundraiser; 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Feeding South Dakota. For many small businesses, that can be a task that's next to impossible. But for Abourezk, it's all worth it for the cause.
"Well for me, child hunger is just a personal charity for me; it makes me enjoy my Christmas. I am blessed with good business and I give my daughter food. And in my heart knowing that I can give my daughter food and a good meal knowing I can do that for someone else even just one person," Abourezk said.
And for those at Feeding South Dakota, what Abourezk is doing is something they are thankful for and hope others will see as a great opportunity.
"For our organization, events like these make a huge difference and Sanaa is donating 100 percent of the food and 100 percent of the labor. So if you are looking for a way to give back, there is no better opportunity than this," Kerri DeGraff with Feeding South Dakota said.
Abourezk hopes people will come because not only is it a fulfilling meal but a good time as well.
"It's fun fundraising. You cannot have the table just for yourself. So people meet other people and the spirit is very good. The karma is very good. It's noisy and all I ever hear is 'No more salad, no more chicken!' So I keep cooking," Abourezk said.
The fundraiser is this Saturday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Abourezk is asking for a $10 donation and at least two cans of food. But she says if you want to bring more you are welcome to do so.
She hopes to break last year's record of more than $3,000 and 400 pounds of food.
