Newest Saint Honored At Mass In Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Sunday was more than just a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls. It was also a day of honoring the newest saint.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the most recent to be canonized by the Pope in Rome. And just last month, two deacons South Dakota Deacons made the journey to Rome to see the canonization.

For them this wasn't just any canonization but the first for one specific group.

"She is the first Native American to be canonized by the Pope and the Catholic Church. And that makes it a huge deal for Native Americans across the country," Gene Young with the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese said.

The church honored Tekakwitha and said she serves as a model for the unity of the people, by leading a life of innocence and firm of faith.
