SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Feeding South Dakota is always doing whatever it can to help people get food on the table. Now the organization is asking for your help this Thanksgiving.

Planning a big Thanksgiving dinner is a tradition for many people. But for some, that meal is out of reach. Now Feeding South Dakota needs your help in the form of turkeys.

"It's been tremendous; it keeps building.  We got 1,000 turkeys the first year, 2,500 the second year and this year we are looking to bring in 5,000, you know.  Because we are getting an earlier start, we are looking at meeting a higher goal so we can help as many families as we can," Jim Dawson with Feeding South Dakota said.

But there's not just a need for turkeys; they're collecting all of the trimmings as well.

"Most of these families are really struggling to put food on the table, period.  And they don't have the opportunity to sit down and share a family meal," Dawson said.

While this may only be the third official year of asking for turkeys statewide, it's something Feeding South Dakota has been doing for a long time. But as times change, so does the organization.

"You know, in the past we depended on some corporate sponsors who would come through automatically every year.  They are being impacted by the economy as well as a lot of our constituents, so they had to cut back," Dawson said.

And this year, organizers hope to beat their own record. They're also taking cash donations that will help fill their shelves with all of those turkey day trimmings.

"We are going to try to buy fixings with those donations if we get enough turkeys in we are going to use the funds to buy the trimmings," Dawson said

If you can't afford to donate a turkey but still want to help, visit the Feeding South Dakota website to find out how you can donate the fixings or even cash.
