SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's been one week since the city of Sioux Falls enacted a texting and driving ban for drivers. And the data can be interpreted in a couple of different ways.

Police have issued zero tickets for texting and driving over the first week of the ban. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's not working.

Officer Sam Clemens says the burden of proof is tough on officers because they would have to prove in court they saw someone texting and driving. But the overall goal is to catch any careless drivers.

"If you stop somebody and you believe they're texting and they say, 'no, we're making a phone call,' but they were driving and swerving in their lane or not paying attention to the roadway, they could still be cited for any number of different law violations," Officer Sam Clemens said.

Tonight on KELOLAND News, we'll hear more from Officer Clemens about the ban and talk with Sioux Falls City Council members about the ban's effectiveness so far.
