RAPID CITY, SD -

A snow storm is causing many schools and businesses in the Black Hills to close for the day, including Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

In Rapid City, the snowflakes didn't start to fly until around 8 a.m. Friday, but people knew what was coming and many took precautionary measures.

Many schools across western South Dakota have cancelled classes, including the Rapid City School District.  Many others are dismissing students early.  With the heavy snow starting to fall and conditions expected to get worse, it's just too dangerous to be out.

Some businesses in Rapid City are also closed due to the weather or considering shutting down early.

"All morning I've been fielding phone calls from customers cancelling and rescheduling. So I would expect that by mid-afternoon or so we will have rescheduled everybody to a different day, and we may even close down ourselves and go home," business owner Dennis Halterman said.

Although the snow can make traveling tricky and lead to hours behind a shovel, most people welcome it.  People understand how important snow is to the economy.
