RAPID CITY, SD -

Rapid City police are handling the shooting death of a 33-year-old man outside a Rapid City hotel as a homicide investigation.

Police were called to the South Dakota Rose Inn in northern Rapid City around 7:10 p.m. Monday for a report of shots fired.

That's when they found Eustacio Marrufo dead of a gunshot wound and began searching for a suspect. Officials believe Marrufo knew the shooter and that it is an isolated incident.

While officials say he was known to have lived most recently in Rapid City and Kansas, people who work nearby say the area is home to a large transient population.

"It's unfortunate what happened last night with the person losing their life.  Unfortunately, some of the folks that are in the area have a hard time," local business owner Linda Kelly said.

Both the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff's Department are investigating the homicide.
