MITCHELL, SD -
Davison County commissioners have approved $8,900 in upgrades to the county jail's surveillance camera system in the wake of an inmate assault on a guard.
Authorities say corrections officer James Dietz required hospitalization and facial surgery after being attacked by an inmate Jan. 1. The inmate has not been identified.
Jail Administrator Don Radel says more cameras might not have prevented the attack, but they would have provided a better record of the incident that could have been used in court.
Dietz is recovering but has not been cleared by a doctor to return to work.
