MITCHELL, SD -
It isn't quite October yet, but a group in Mitchell is kick-starting domestic violence awareness month with an event Saturday evening.
Hitchcock Park in Mitchell was filled with the color purple as participants raised awareness for domestic violence.
This is the first year for the 'Voices For Hope' event and organizers hope their small start will have a big impact down the line.
"A dream starts with a small drop in a water puddle and that water puddle ripples into something big and that's kind of what I'm looking for at least if I can start getting the word out," event organizer Jill Tietze said.
Saturday’s event includes speakers, vendors and a candlelight vigil at dusk.
