HURON, SD -
City council members in Huron have passed the first reading of a texting while driving ban.
The ordinance would make it illegal to text behind the wheel while in motion. It would also ban the use of electronic devices while driving if you have a learner’s permit or are a bus driver with kids on board.
Under the law, drivers could also get a ticket for any distracting behavior that causes them to drive in an unsafe manner.
When you combine court costs and a fine, drivers caught texting and driving in Huron would have to pay $160. Violators of the distracted driving portion of the ordinance would pay $75.
The ordinance still has to pass a second reading before coming law.
