Huron Schools On Lockdown For Inmate Search
Charles Beeney

HURON, SD -

Schools in the Huron School District will hold classes Tuesday but they'll be locked up as local officials search for an escaped inmate.

Charles Leroy Beeney, 45, escaped from the Huron County Correctional Center at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and is considered armed and dangerous.

Superintendent Terry Nebelsick says the district coordinated with police Tuesday morning to place officers at as many school bus stops as possible as students headed to school.

The school day will happen as usual inside schools but students will not be allowed outside for recess or off-site classes.  Instead, students who take classes at the district's vocational campus will go to class at the high school.

Nebelsick says the district's school resource officer will continue to coordinate efforts with police throughout the day.  If the issue is not resolved by the afternoon, officers will once again help monitor school bus drop-off sites.

Other small school districts in Beadle County are also on lockdown and coordinating safety efforts with the Beadle County Sheriff's Office.
