BROOKINGS, SD -

South Dakota State University students have endorsed the fast food chain Chick-Fil-A despite push back from the gay and lesbian community following controversial comments by the chain's leader.

The SDSU Student Senate adopted a resolution in support of the restaurant moving to campus. Those in favor said the vote was a vote for students who wanted more options. Those against the resolution say they were voicing student concerns that a charitable organization connected to the corporation spreads blatant lies about the gay community.

"If there are groups on campus who say that Chick-Fil-A has done this sort of thing, that should be put to a debate. It shouldn't be pushed over. These issues do affect students. They may not think so, but it does affect them," SDSU senior Hassan Amir said, opposing the vote.

"There are a lot of students who didn't realize the importance at SDSU.  But it has been a great thing for students to look into and it's important for our Senate to talk about and have an opinion on this as well," SDSU junior Denielle Meyerink said after she voted for the resolution.

The student senate also voted down a separate resolution that would have shifted support to the gay community and would have reinforced the student's commitment to gay students.
