Construction has started on a $1.16 million nature center building at the Dakota Nature Park in Brookings.
The 5,300-square foot center will have a rustic appearance and overlook ponds in a corner of the park.
Dakota Nature Park is a 135-acre property that once contained a series of gravel pits and the city landfill.
The reclaimed area is now fully wooded and offers fishing, boating, hiking and biking.
The Brookings Register says areas within the park will be closed for safety until further notice.
