An eight-year-old girl from Brandon not only knows how to cook, but she'll soon be making food for first lady Michelle Obama.
Eva Farley will represent South Dakota at the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and Kids' State Dinner at the White House this month.
She's not your typical eight year old in the kitchen. She knows the exact mix to put in her "Miss Kitty's Egg Salad Sensation."
"Mustard, Greek yogurt, salt, pepper and dill," Eva said.
"When she was little, she was in with her cooking hat and apron. She's always enjoyed helping out," Eva's mom, Jessica Farley, said.
But now Eva is not just helping out. She's practicing to cook for first lady Michelle Obama. She was selected to take part in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and Kids' State Dinner at the White House.
"We love to cook and when my sister told me about this contest, we thought, 'What a great opportunity for Eva to get to see Washington, D.C. and the White House,'" Jessica said.
The contest hopes to cook up more than just creativity in the kitchen; the nation's leaders want it to provide a recipe for kids to eat nutritious meals.
"I struggle with that every day. They want to east fast," Jessica said.
With so many unhealthy options out there, Jessica says cooking is a great way to know what you're putting in your body.
"Sometimes they don't eat for hunger, but for taste, so I really have to try out new recipes and new ideas," Jessica said.
In addition to cooking their own food, the Farleys also have a large garden.
"You really get hands on with your food, and you know what's in it. I think it's really important," Jessica said
Jessica is excited to tour the White House kitchen garden in the upcoming trip. She'll also get to meet the first lady.
But most of all, Jessica hopes the competition will bring a smile to Eva's face and teach her even more healthy habits.
"After this contest, it's really ignited a spark to do this more in our meals," Jessica said.
The State Dinner is August 20. Eva and her mom both get to travel to Washington, D.C., and spend two days there for free.
