ABERDEEN, SD -

People in Aberdeen are busy digging out from the eight inches of snow that fell overnight.

The city's efforts started early Tuesday morning when plows cleared emergency snow routes. They moved to residential neighborhoods at 7 a.m., clearing north-south streets. They'll switch to east-west routes Tuesday afternoon and clear the downtown area Tuesday night.

Most of the major streets are clear but drivers had to plow through quite a bit of snow before that happened.

"I did get stuck really early this morning, right after midnight on my way back form mid-state. Got stuck as I turned onto the highway," resident Nathan Frederickson said.

This is Aberdeen's first city-wide snow removal of 2013 and it budgets for five so there's still plenty of room in that budget for more snow this year.

The public works director says when snowfall amounts pass a foot the city can face delays and higher costs. But he calls Tuesday's eight inches within the realm of normal.
