S. Dakota Festival Draws Filmmakers Nationwide

The South Dakota Film Festival doesn't draw the attention of some better-known fests - think Cannes or Sundance - but organizers say it's fast becoming one of the best known in the Midwest.

Co-producer Tom Black says it's the festival's central location in the small town of Aberdeen that makes it so ideal. Filmmakers fly from across the country to show their independent movies in downtown's historic Capitol Theatre.

Mike Scholtz's film, "Wild Bill's Run," won the festival's award for best documentary. Scholtz says it's his third year at the festival, and that the town of 27,000 residents provides a "charming" atmosphere.

Black says the festival is growing so quickly that it might have to expand to other downtown locations in the next year or two.

This year's festival runs through Sunday.
