Welcome to AUGUSTANA COLLEGE!

Purpose, Values, and Vision

Augustana is a selective, residential comprehensive (liberal arts and professional) college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Its students enjoy a collegiate experience that combines a broad foundation in the liberal arts with preparation for professional careers and advanced study. Central to its mission are five core values: Christian, Liberal Arts, Excellence, Community and Service. These values serve as the foundation for the College’s academic and student life programs. Augustana aspires to be one of America’s premier church-related colleges.

Location

Sioux Falls boasts a population that exceeds 155,000 and offers one of the Midwest’s most dynamic and robust business environments. The city is home to an array of leading companies in agribusiness, biotechnology, financial services, health care, high-tech manufacturing, retail and tourism.

Recognition

Augustana’s fine reputation is affirmed by many outside sources, including Petersons 440 Colleges for Top Students. Princeton Review has also named Augustana a “Best Midwestern College.” U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks the College in the top ten of its classification and also a “Best Buy.” The Templeton Guide recognizes the College among those that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives. Harvard Schmarvard identifies Augustana among “100 outstanding but underappreciated colleges” in the U.S.

Students

Approximately 1,800 students attend Augustana representing nearly twenty-five states. Ninety per cent come from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Sixteen per cent are first-generation college students and nearly 12 per cent are alumni legacies. A growing international student population represents more than a dozen foreign countries. The average ACT of the entering class in Fall 2009 is 25, one of the best entering academic profiles of any college or university in the region.

The Academic Program

The heart of the Augustana experience is a rigorous academic program taught by a remarkable collection of professors. All are passionate about their disciplines and their teaching. Publishing, conducting research, and attaining national prominence have helped to create the rich liberal arts environment that exists on campus today. Over 80 per cent of Augustana’s full-time tenured and tenure-track professors hold the highest degree in their field. The College offers over 50 majors and pre-professional specializations within a 4-1-4 academic calendar. Extensive internship, study-abroad and undergraduate research programs supplement the curriculum. Civitas, the College’s honors program, provides an environment for students who desire an even more challenging and rigorous intellectual experience.

At the Heart of Arts

With the addition of the 24,000 square-foot Center for Visual Arts, the College continues to be a center for the performing and visual arts in the Sioux Empire. Twenty-four percent of Augustana students are involved in music ensembles, theatre productions and art exhibitions. The Augustana Band and The Augustana Choir tour nationally and internationally. The new Eide/Dalrymple Gallery hosts exhibitions every year of works by professional and student artists. The Theatre Department produces main stage shows including a musical and helps present Viking Varieties, one of the College’s core homecoming traditions. In addition, the College and the South Dakota Symphony partner to bring national and international string players to Sioux Falls through the Augustana Faculty String Quartet.

Alumni Outcomes

Approximately 25 per cent of Augustana’s graduating class attends graduate and professional school. Acceptance into medical school over the last three years has been 90 percent, twice the national average. In addition, 93 per cent of those seeking employment in the graduating class of 2009 report that they have found positions related to their field of study within eight months of graduation.
