An educated shopper is a smart shopper. This holds true not only when selecting the right remodeler for your project but also when choosing which improvements will be made to your home.

As the economy continues to improve in the Sioux Empire you are probably starting to look around your home and see what could stand to be updated. We’re over the “doom and gloom” and ready to move on with our lives and get back to normal. It no longer has to be just the necessary updates… it’s time to finally redo that dated kitchen or complete your unfinished basement.

As you interview potential remodelers, being able to understand the overall process can help you avoid miscommunication and ensure a smoother remodeling experience so you and your family can enjoy your new or updated kitchen, bathroom or room addition even sooner.

Finding a remodeler who is right for you will take some time and planning, but it is worth the effort when you are satisfied with the completed project.

  • Is the remodeler an active participant in a trade organization such the Remodeling Council of the Sioux Empire? Click here to find out.

  • Seek referrals from friends, family, neighbors and coworkers who have had remodeling work done and ask them if they would hire the remodeler again.

  • Is the remodeler accredited in a certification program such as a Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR), Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) or Certified Green Professional (CGP)? Remodelers bearing these and other credentials indicate that they have met a prescribed set of educational requirements of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and follow a strict code of business and professional ethics.

  • Check with your state’s licensing agency and local building inspectors to verify the remodeler has the appropriate license(s).

  • When you begin to interview a remodeler, keep in mind that you are buying a service rather than a product. The quality of service the remodeler provides will determine the quality of the finished project and your satisfaction with it. Take a look at the remodeler's business and management experience.

  • In addition to business and management experience, look at the remodeler’s construction and technical expertise, customer service and communication skills.

  • Does the remodeler carry insurance that protects you from claims arising from property damage or jobsite injuries?

  • Does the remodeler offer an array of options for your project thus demonstrating a knowledge of and experience with a variety of products, materials and techniques?

  • Will the remodeler provide you with scheduled updates so that you can make appropriate decisions and prepare for any inconveniences?

  • Is the remodeler properly trained to deal with any potential lead paint issues? Click here for more information about this important topic and how to keep your family safe. (
