Close to two million visitors come into Sioux Falls every year for sports tournaments, music festivals and other events. Aside from the sales taxes those visitors pay, people who stay in the city's hotels are also helping the city, but in a different way.
A one percent "room tax" is tacked onto visitors staying at hotels and motels throughout Sioux Falls. And the latest numbers reveal that revenues are up from last year.
From January to July, the city has generated close to $352,000 in room tax revenue.
That's up more than 5 percent from the same time last year and sets an all-time monthly record in the process. It also led to 10 percent gain since 2007.
Officials with the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitor's Bureau say high traffic for events like the Air Show, Jazz Fest and sporting tournaments has helped increase room tax revenue this year.
All of that tax revenue is given to the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitor's Bureau to market the city for future events and luring in business conventions. Officials say the city benefits far more from the sales tax revenue generated by the people attending such events.
Visitors spend anywhere between $200 million and $250 million a year. Officials say raking in revenue is proving to boost businesses.
