  • Henderschiedt and Brookings Health System Receive Patriotic Employer Award

Henderschiedt and Brookings Health System Receive Patriotic Employer Award

    Brookings Health System

On June 28, Brookings Health System Board of Trustees gathered to accept the Patriotic Employer award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), part of the Department of Defense. Keith Corbett, dean of the University College at South Dakota State University, presented the award and explained why it was such a significant event.

“As a retired Army general, I know how important it is to support the men and women who serve and eagerly accept the opportunity to serve the nation when asked,” said Corbett, who represents the Secretary of Defense while presenting the Patriot Award.

The Department of Defense gave the award in recognition of former nursing home Brookview Manor’s and Brookings Health System’s continuing support of employees who serve in the National Guard and National Reserve. The purpose on the award states, “For contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force.”

The three primary qualifications to be considered for the award include being supportive of the service member, being nominated by the service member or being nominated by a spouse whose significant other was deployed.

Specialist Sandra Sprecher, who currently works at The Neighborhoods at Brookview as a certified nursing assistant and medication aide and previously worked for nearly four years at Brookview Manor, nominated her supervisor, Heidi Henderschiedt, a neighborhood coordinator at the nursing home.

“I nominated Heidi and Brookings Health System for the award because of how the transition from war to work was so effortless,” said Sprecher. “Everyone welcomed me back with as little stress as possible. Also, I never once have been scheduled to work on my drill weekends, even if my drill weekend falls on a weekend I am supposed to work.”

Sprecher was deployed in 2011 to Afghanistan, primarily based in Helmand province, with the 200th Engineer Company of the South Dakota National Guard, stationed in Pierre. She currently serves as dental specialist for the South Dakota Medical Command of Rapid City.

“The Patriot Award gives employees a means to say ‘thank-you’ to their employers for their support of the soldier, whether it be weekend drills, annual training, or when the service member is activated,” said Corbett.

Brookings Health System supports all employees who serve in the armed forces and their military training and service leaves of absences in accordance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).

  • Chaplain Gregg TeBeest Completes Clinical Pastoral Education

Chaplain Gregg TeBeest Completes Clinical Pastoral Education

Training enables chaplain to effectively minister to people of all faiths, cultural and spiritual backgrounds

The Reverend Gregg TeBeest, chaplain at Brookings Health System, recently completed his Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).

TeBeest received his clinical training from Avera Health ACPE System Center in Sioux Falls. To complete his education, he underwent four training units, each of which required 100 hours of structured group and individual education and 300 hours of supervised clinical practice ministry.

The training enables TeBeest to effectively minister to people of all faiths, cultural and spiritual backgrounds or those with no religious affiliation.

“One of the goals of CPE training is to promote the chaplain’s sense of self awareness,” said TeBeest. “Having this awareness enables me to identify with a patient’s experience without intruding on their story.

“For example, I find that patients often struggle with the meaning of illness and death even as I have. During a pastoral care visit, I focus on the patient’s experience and not a script or a personal agenda. While I may identify with their experience, I strive to enable them to explore their unique experiences and to come to terms with its meaning. Through providing spiritual care, I have learned that patients who share their experiences often make self discoveries which in turn help them to be more at peace and accepting of their circumstances.”

As the health system’s chaplain for the past three years, TeBeest provides free of charge spiritual care and pastoral counseling to hospital and hospice patients, The Neighborhoods at Brookview residents, and Brookings Health System employees. Services he provides include bereavement care for families, funerals and memorial services for patients and residents without faith support, and chapel services for residents at The Neighborhoods at Brookview.

In addition to his CPE training, TeBeest holds a bachelor’s degree in Bible and Pastorology from Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Owatonna, Minn.; and a master’s degree of Divinity from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Minneapolis. He also has eight years of experience as a parish pastor.

Brookings Health System patients, residents, and family members who would like a pastoral care visit from TeBeest may place a request with care providers.

Stoel Certified As VitalStim Therapy Provider

    Brookings Health System

Amy Stoel, speech-language pathologist at Brookings Health System, recently completed certification to provide ViatalStim therapy to patients.

“VitalStim therapy is a cutting-edge, progressive treatment that allows Brookings Health System to combine the benefits of technology and traditional exercise methods in patient care,” said Chief Nursing Officer Tammy Hillestad.

Speech-language pathologists use VitalStim therapy to help patients who experience difficulty swallowing due to injury or illness. VitalStim therapy applies neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the patient’s swallowing muscles while the patient performs conventional swallowing exercises. It helps the brain to remap swallowing control and strengthens muscles, restoring the patient’s swallowing function.

To become a certified VitalStim therapy provider, Stoel was required to complete an online course, pass a written examination, demonstrate the ability to incorporate VitalStim therapy into an appropriate treatment regimen, and demonstrate proficiency in applying electrodes and operating equipment.
