Republicans in tomorrow’s off year elections are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Off year elections are read like tea leaves to determine which way the national political winds are blowing. Real or not the results are a reading of the political temperature of the country.

The GOP is poised to make strong showing in the two marquis elections tomorrow for the Governorships of Virginia and New Jersey. Both are states with Democrat incumbents and both states that Barack Obama carried in 2008. Current polling shows that Virginia should land in the Republican win column and New Jersey is a toss up.

The news of two GOP wins or a GOP win and a close race in The Garden State would be a big step in changing the political fortunes of the Republican Party.

Unfortunately events that are taking place in far upstate New York is going to take any shine off the GOP’s major election gains. New York’s 23rd Congressional District that borders Canada has become the epicenter of a fight among Republicans that is taking the story of the rejection of Obama leadership and resurgence of the GOP away from above the fold. Electronic media will not be leading with Virginia and New Jersey but talking about Plattsburg, NY.

Essentially what has happened is that President Obama has appointed the District’s Congressman John McHugh to be Secretary of the Army, creating the vacancy. The 23d District is reliably Republican having consecutively elected Republicans for the past 120 years. Congressman McHugh served the 23rd for the last 16 years. Upon the vacancy under New York law and party rules a group of legally designated Republican officials from the 11 counties within the District selected State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava as the Republican nominee for the Special Election that will be held tomorrow. BTW the 23rd District has an approximate 50,000 Republican voter registration advantage.

The other candidates in the Special Election are Doug Hoffman the Conservative Party candidate and Bill Owens the Democrat Party candidate. Early polling showed Ms. Scozzafava with the lead. She was endorsed by the Party establishment both NY State Party Chairman Ed Cox (factoid – Cox is the husband of Tricia Nixon and consequently Richard Nixon’s son in law and it was speculated in 2006 that Cox might be the GOP candidate against Hillary Rodham) and Michael Steele, Republican National Committee Chairman.

I empathize with both Chairmen. It is the duty of party officials at all levels to support the party’s candidates. You don’t have to like them; you don’t have to agree with – It Just Comes with the Territory!

It seems that Ms. Scozzafava has some positions that didn’t sit well with all in particular the Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Pat Buchanan types. After raising the decibel level of many of the GOP candidate’s unorthodox opinions, the political ground in upstate New York began to change. Several office holders and several wanna be office holders weighed in. Not to be helpful but to get in on the act and to benefit their own cause. Some pretty high profile persons (both supporting her and abandoning the GOP endorsement and supporting the Conservative candidate) that included Dick Armey, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and of course the pundits.

I certainly do not share all of the GOP candidate’s views but it is not in the party’s best interest to wander off the reservation. Keep in the mind that New York Republicans are not the same as Texas, Wyoming, or South Dakota Republicans. There are differences. Also understand that a Republican presence has all but disappeared in the Northeast. New York is the only state in the Northeast to have Republican representation in the U S House and in NY there are only 3 Republicans out of 29 including the vacant 23rd. Thus it might not be surprising that the people in the District might tend to the moderate side.

I could go on about party loyalty and all that but the plot thickens. Because of the national attention, Mr. Hoffman the Conservative candidate was blessed with about $3 million dollars in donations from out of the District. The money combined with highlighting of Ms. Scozzafava’s liberal positions has put the lady in the cellar. If things couldn’t get any stranger on Saturday Dede dropped out and on Sunday endorsed Mr. Owens the Democrat.

Why she backed out I don’t know, with 3 days to go she should have stuck it out. Her endorsement of the Democrat is disgusting. She was the GOP candidate and like Republican officials needing to stay loyal to the party she should have not endorsed.

If you are upset at Republican Party officials selecting her, you should be. But as I often point out you must play by the rules, not change them in the middle of the game. After the election deep six the GOP officials and change the selection rules not grouse about your candidate - once selected it’s too late for that.

Had she been elected she would have caucused with the GOP (House Republican Leader John Boehner rightfully endorsed her). Now no matter who wins, Hoffman or Owens the sails of the GOP ship will have been trimmed. The culprit is Republican Party squabbling.

Virginia and New Jersey results Wednesday could have heralded a bright new day for the GOP, but New York 23 changed that.

Thirty years ago today, Sergey Brin, a 6-year-old Soviet boy facing an uncertain future, arrived in the United States with the help of the society.

“I would have never had the kinds of opportunities I’ve had here in the Soviet Union, or even in Russia today,” Mr. Brin said in an interview. “I would like to see anyone be able to achieve their dreams, and that’s what this organization does.”

The gift is small, given Mr. Brin’s estimated $16 billion in personal wealth, but he said it signaled a growing commitment by him and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, to engage more substantially in philanthropy.

“We’ve given away over $30 million so far, which isn’t so tiny but obviously small in terms of our, um, theoretical wealth,” Mr. Brin said. “Our philanthropy is something I want to take my time with and develop and systematize.”

He has already learned enough about philanthropy to add immediately: “Our foundation is not soliciting proposals.
Mr. Brin noted that Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft , was widely criticized for not giving away enough money but is now known as one of the world’s leading philanthropists. “While everyone was criticizing him, he was generating a whole lot more money for his foundation, and ultimately, when he got serious about philanthropy, he did it really well,” Mr. Brin said. “I’d like to learn from that example.”

The bulk of the money the Brins have given away has gone to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and other research organizations devoted to Parkinson’s disease. But this year, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Brin family’s immigration to the United States, they have given gifts to several Jewish organizations that aided along the way. HIAS, which helped the family navigate the cumbersome process of leaving the Soviet Union for the United States, paid for tickets, gave them money and helped them apply for visas, received the largest amount.

The family lived in Paris for several months while waiting for visas and then moved to Maryland, and the relationship with HIAS ended. “Although they gave us tremendous help, we didn’t stay connected with HIAS,” said Eugenia Brin, Mr. Brin’s mother. “Then a few years ago, I guess because of Google, we got a call from HIAS asking if we could help them digitize their archives.”

Eventually, Mrs. Brin joined the HIAS board and started a social networking site, mystory.hias.org, initially to encourage Russian Jewish immigrants to post their stories and eventually to attract the stories of other immigrants.

Gideon Aronoff, chief executive of HIAS, said the gift would be put to a variety of uses, like increasing the organization’s use of technology and supporting advocacy on immigration policy.

The economic model has changed. The credit meltdown last October was a game changer. Foremost as business and industry retrenched to deal with the worst recession since the Great Depression they reworked their business plans. This is particularly true in the Retail sector. Retailers closed stores, shunning employees and went into overdrive adapting a warehouse direct to consumer sales plan. On all fronts employers adopted technology and use of Internet to increase growth. Until the economy has real sustained growth these retail jobs will be a long time coming back. With the new Internet model many are lost forever.

Not just automobile jobs but even light manufacturing as well. Our economy is global and outsourcing will continue. Many jobs can be done overseas with quality equal to American at far lower that U S costs. This presents challenges economically but exacerbates the shift from the information age to our digital knowledge economy. Thus putting a premium on creating the right kinds of jobs for increased investments in education and primary research.

In today’s economy, workers value their jobs. Employees are not expecting raises automatically and they are working harder (increased productivity). Employees are telling their boss, there is no need to hire someone, we will work harder. Employees are taking care of their jobs understanding their employer must remain economically viable.

Losses in retirement funds caused by the drop in the stock market have caused many workers to postpone their retirements. Thus depriving younger workers of needed job openings. Over time this delay in retirement does create some pent up demand for jobs but they may be five years or more further in the future. These workers will retire either as they age or their portfolios recover and grow.

This Q&A profiles Dr. R. Blake Curd, a hand, microvascular and orthopedic surgeon at the Orthopedic Institute and a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives.

Q: How did you become interested in your field?

A: “I was always interested in medicine; as a boy I believed I would be a doctor. I was fascinated by the challenge of operating with a microscope and the microscopic instruments. I loved the mechanical part of orthopedic surgery and the satisfaction of ‘fixing’ things that were broken in people.”

Q: How many years have you been in your profession?

A: “Finished medical school in 1991 at age 23.”

Q: What is a typical day like?

A: “Up at 5, exercise for 60 to 90 minutes, news, time with kids, kids to school, surgery begins between 6:30 and 7 and runs until 6 p.m. or later on surgery days. Office starts around 7:30 a.m. and runs until 5:30 or 6 p.m. on office days. Professional reading after, home with kids and their events. Pleasure reading and political information gathering – reading/Internet/communications – until 11:30 p.m. or midnight and then begin again.”

Q: What type of changes or advancements are occurring in your field?

A: “Better pain control, better hardware, smaller incisions, less time in the hospital, less infection, improved technology. Cosmetic hand surgery is becoming popular.”

Q: What is the most common procedure you perform?

A: “Carpal tunnel release.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

A: “Meeting new people, understanding who they are and what they need to get better, developing that plan with them and then implementing it.”

Q: What is the biggest challenge?

A: “Understanding what a patient wants or needs and then balancing that with what is technically possible.”

Q: What are South Dakota’s biggest needs in the field?

A: “We – hand and microvascular surgeons – are in short supply nationally and internationally. South Dakota faces the same challenge.”

Q: How did you become interested in politics?

A: “I was asked to travel to D.C. to talk about physician and patient rights. I had no interest in political office and believed my trip would have no impact. I found quite the opposite to be the case. My trip, and numerous subsequent visits, made a difference, not only on a national level, but also in me. The initial trip lit a fire inside me for a different type of public service that burns brighter now than ever.”

Q: What issue do you hope to champion in the Legislature next year?

A: “We have to strive to arrive at a budget that does not contain a structural deficit and does not commit us to unsustainable future spending.”

Marty Jackley, was sworn in today as the 30th South Dakota Attorney General. He replaced Larry Long who the Governor appointed as a Circuit Judge in the Second Judicial Circuit.

The swearing in ceremony was held in Sioux Falls at the Minnehaha Old Court House Museum. As many as three hundred attended the event emceed by the outgoing Attorney General. In attendance were many members of the Bar including several members of the Judiciary, State Legislature, Law Enforcement, Assistant Attorney Generals, Assistant U S Attorneys, and friends of Marty Jackley.

The Governor was there and spoke very briefly. The new AG was sworn in by his father Mike Jackley. The senior Jackley a retired attorney from Sturgis has been active in Republican and State politics for many years. Mike served as Meade County States Attorney for 12 years.

The ceremony was also attended by President Obama’s nominee to replace Jackley as U S Attorney for the District of South Dakota, Brendan Johnson. Johnson son of Senator Tim Johnson is expected to be confirmed very shortly when the Congress returns to session next week. Johnson’s confirmation could come as early as next week with Justice Sotomayor’s confirmation off the plate of the U S Senate Judiciary Committee. The Acting (Interim) U S Attorney for South Dakota is Dennis Holmes, a long time Assistant U S Attorney.

Marty Jackley is an outstanding replacement for Long who served as General for about 7 years, as Chief Deputy Attorney General for Mark Barnett for 12 years and prior to that for perhaps nearing 20 years as the Bennett County States Attorney. Long is a fair minded man and will be a good Judge.

Jackley brings quite a resume to his new office. He grew up in the Sturgis area. He is a graduate of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in Electrical Engineering and the University of South Dakota Law School. Upon graduating from law school in 1995 Marty served as a law clerk for Chief Federal Judge Dick Battey. Leaving his Clerk’s position in 1997 Marty was associated with the Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson law firm in Rapid City. During that time he also served as needed as a Special Assistant Attorney General in Butte, Fall River, Custer, and Meade Counties prosecuting controlled substance felonies. In 2006 President Bush nominated and the U S Senate confirmed his as U S Attorney for South Dakota. In 2008 Marty Jackley received the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year Award from the South Dakota State’s Attorney’s Association.

Last evening many of Marty Jackley’ s friends, associates from the U S Attorney’s Office, and other members of the legal fraternity had a dinner at the Downtown Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls to wish the new Top Cop well as he embarked on his new job. I was not there but it was reported to me that perhaps the most notable kudos given to the exiting U S Attorney was from Senior Federal Judge Lawrence Piersol. Judge Piersol in his remarks said that under Jackley’s leadership, attorney’s under his direction were always prepared and only presented facts they could absolutely substantiate. When some facts were not on their side of the argument they did not take up the Court’s time by saying they were. (note – this is my interpretation of what the Judge said and any errors are mine – though in any event my source said His Honor's remarks were flattering.) This is a pretty high compliment given the partisan nature of the Judge who before he sat on the Bench was the Democrat Majority Leader in the South Dakota Legislature. Judge Piersol also led Tom Daschle’s legal effort in the recount effort when Daschle won his first election in 1978 to the District 1 U S Congressional seat. (Daschle won by 139 votes – 64683 to 64544).

Jackley will hit the ground running and there will be little transition time in the AG’s office with the arrival of a new boss. Jackley might be the best qualified person to ever become Attorney General coming directly from running a large prosecutor’s office. His experience with Native American law as USA is especially notable.

I expect Marty to seek the Republican nomination in 2010. In earlier press reports he said he will give the election some thought after taking office. He will clearly be the favorite as the incumbent to win the GOP nomination. Jackley prior to serving as U S Attorney was active in the Republican Party. Growing up in Meade County and living in both Rapid City and Sioux Falls gives him a statewide base.

For the Democrats, they better start looking for some First Class talent to oppose him if they want to have any chance to win the Attorney General’s office. Recycling Ron Volesky again is not a winning formula.

It is very safe to say that today there is another political star ascending in South Dakota.

News media and the blogs have reported pretty extensively on the political kabuki theatre and hypocrisy surrounding Senator Kennedy’s replacement. Senator Kennedy himself got into the act only the week before his death when he suggested the Massachusetts succession law be changed to allow the Governor to appoint an interim replacement until an election could be held. This change contradicts Senator Kennedy’s previous successful effort that changed the law from the power of gubernatorial appointment (that he now favors) to holding a Special Election with no interim appointment..

Senator Kennedy’s motives are driven by the party of the Governor sitting in the Massachusetts State House at the time of an appointment. I posted previously that Ted Kennedy’s son, U S Congressman from Rhode Island was his likely successor. However after watching the moving and passionate tribute by son Ted Kennedy, Jr. at the funeral in the Basilica on Saturday, my money is now on Ted Junior. if he wants it.
Senator Edward Moore Kennedy who has been part of the political landscape for close to half a century has passed on. Unless you have been living under a rock on a different planet you already knew this. The report of his death was the entire Associated Press radio newscast at 7am this morning. No other story. No Ben Bernanke being reappointed … no nothing but Teddy Kennedy. Few Americans, I included can remember when Teddy Kennedy wasn’t a U S Senator.

Recollections

I first heard of Ted Kennedy during the 1960 Presidential campaign when he briefly visited Fort Worth. Kennedy was just out of the University Of Virginia Law School and was making the rounds stumping for the Kennedy – Johnson ticket.

The reason I remember Ted showing up was a close childhood buddy had his picture published in “The Fort Worth Press" with the young Ted Kennedy. My friend’s family was active in the Democrat party and Ricky’s dad had been a delegate or alternate to the Los Angeles Convention and as far as I know, Doc Rapfogel was the only Texan in Los Angeles who was supporting Adlai Stevenson. The Rapfogel’s were really liberal. They hadn’t at least initially supported JFK either. Texas was supporting their favorite son, Senate Majority Leader, Lyndon Baines Johnson. It is important to note that conservative Texans were not a lead pipe cinch to support Kennedy even with Johnson on the ticket. JFK / LBJ won Texas in November 50.52% to 48.52% for Nixon / Lodge. It has been suggested that John Kennedy and Landslide Lyndon had a little help in the counties in South Texas west of Corpus Christi. Seven counties including the infamous Duval County went Democrat with over 90% of the vote. That is another story for another time.

The nation next heard from Teddy Kennedy when he became a candidate in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his Brother the President. Had his name been Edward Moore he would never been elected. But that wasn’t his name, it was Ted Kennedy. His brother was President, his father was a wealthy self made Irish American businessman (movies and bootlegging not to forget rumored philanderer) who had served as President Franklin D Roosevelt’s Ambassador to the Court of St. James (Great Britain), and his grandfather was John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald who had been the popular Mayor of Boston. Kennedy won the Democrat primary for the Special Election by a 2 to 1 margin and defeated the Republican in the Special with 55% of the vote.

Reflecting, Kennedy served in the Senate for 47 years. The Constitution provides that to serve in the U S Senate you must be 30 years old. Kennedy died yesterday at the age of 77!

My next recollection of Teddy Kennedy was a national news story about there now being two brothers in the U S Senate. The story focused on Senator Ted picking up older brother Bobby, the newly elected Senator from New York, and taking him to work when the Senate convened in 1965. Later in 1968 the then elder Kennedy campaigned for President and like his older brother John F Kennedy was assassinated.

The “incident” became a national scandal and detoured Ted’s running for President in 1972 helping leave the way open for George Mc Govern. For his part in the accident, Senator Kennedy pled guilty for leaving the scene of an accident and received a suspended sentence.

I disagreed with him about 99% of the time and certainly did not condone much of his private personal behavior. When I became active in partisan politics, Teddy Kennedy became a useful and active target for Republican fundraising and rallying the GOP base. The faithful just could not stand him.

Some of Kennedy’s best legislative work included the 1981 Jobs Training Partnership Act (that replaced CETA that was Carter’s government employment program) and working with President Bush on the No Child Left Behind Act.

Costello I expect will bring the pragmatic hands on problem solving to the Mayor’s office as he has done to his several restaurant enterprises. Costello also is a Certified Public Accountant and thus a numbers guy. On the City Council he has demonstrated these skills in his understanding of the City Budget and the more complex financial issues that have come before the Council.

Saw the movie “Julie and Julia” this weekend. A real treat!

When I left the theatre I was light hearted and had completely forgotten about looming Democrat power grabs and un understandable so called health care reform. It was another great performance by Meryl Streep. As I pondered the movie, the real star became the screenwriter (and also director) Nora Ephron.

Don’t get me wrong Streep was flawless and perfect for the role. She keeps putting notches in her six shooter adding yet another accent to her repertoire. Meryl Streep’s career is amazing. She still has star power and box office pull at 60. Most actresses lose it at 40. I think it has something to do with their waistline. Watching Streep in “The Bridges of Madison County” make you love your wife even more and when watching her recent performance in “Mama Mia” you just lose your real world in her emotion and upbeat joy of life.

Amy Adams too was heart warming. The movie was very comfortable. It begins with the sight of Child arriving in Paris and the unloading of her car, a post WWII (probably a ’47 or ’48) vintage Buick Roadmaster Station Wagon woody. The sweetness of the characters, the determination of the women, the understanding of the husbands, and what could be more comfortable than people enjoying good food.

Nora Ephron stole the show. She will win a couple of Academy Awards for this one, certainly Screenwriting (Original or Adapted as the case may be) and Directing. Perhaps as a long shot the film might win Musical score. Julie and Julia capture Ephron’s style and stagecraft.

Ephron is great at whatever she does. She juxtaposes the trials (and the trivial sagas) of daily life against what we wish to be the best of human nature. Further she has the power of timing and (at least to me) understands the nuances of changes in the popular culture. Some of her outstanding prior works that I will watch over and over are: “When Harry Met Sally”, “My Blue Heaven”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, and “You’ve Got Mail”.

Ephron often highlights the Internet into her works as she did using email as the romantic conduit in “You’ve Got Mail” (an update to the old movie, “The Shop Around the Corner”) and as she does with the Amy Adams character (Julie) in “Julie and Julia.” Julie connects with Julia Child by blogging about her.

Julia’s unforgettable story – struggles with the head of the Cordon Bleu, rejections from publishers whom she sent her now famous cookbook, a wonderful nearly fifty-year long marriage that took them across the globe unfolds with the spirit so key to her success as a chef and a writer, brilliantly capturing one of the most enduring American personalities of the last fifty years.

More on Nora Ephron – Ephron has had an interesting life – to say the least. Ephron comes by her writing and the movies very naturally. She was the daughter of two screenwriters. Nora grew up California and is a graduate of Beverly Hills High School.

She interned in the White House for John Kennedy and recently suggested that having been given the chance would have like to had an affair with him. I take this as extreme literary license.

Ephron has been married three times. Her second husband was Carl Bernstein of Watergate and “All the President’s Men” fame. At Bernstein’s and Bob Woodward’s request, then wife Nora, rewrote the screenplay for the movie. The Producer did not use it but doing the (attempted) rewrite resulted in Ephron getting her first screenwriting job.

Very interestingly, Wikipedia reports that Ephron was told by then husband Bernstein who Deep Throat was. As reported by Wikipedia, she alluded on occasion the name to others and when asked about his identity, which was often (after all she slept in the same bed with Bernstein). She would reply – My Friend. When it was revealed who Deep Throat was, it was Mark Felt.

Ephron must like writers as her third and current husband of more than twenty years is writer and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi. Pileggi wrote the books “Wiseguy” (that he wrote into the movie “Goodfellas) and the book and movie “Casino.” (BTW Casino is a very good book.)

In nature, every action has consequences, a phenomenon called the butterfly effect. These consequences, moreover, are not necessarily proportional. For example, doubling the carbon dioxide we belch into the atmosphere may far more than double the subsequent problems for society. Realizing this, the world properly worries about greenhouse emissions.

The butterfly effect reaches into the financial world as well. Here, the United States is spewing a potentially damaging substance into our economy — greenback emissions.

To be sure, we’ve been doing this for a reason I resoundingly applaud. Last fall, our financial system stood on the brink of a collapse that threatened a depression. The crisis required our government to display wisdom, courage and decisiveness. Fortunately, the Federal Reserve and key economic officials in both the Bush and Obama administrations responded more than ably to the need.

They made mistakes, of course. How could it have been otherwise when supposedly indestructible pillars of our economic structure were tumbling all around them? A meltdown, though, was avoided, with a gusher of federal money playing an essential role in the rescue.

The United States economy is now out of the emergency room and appears to be on a slow path to recovery. But enormous dosages of monetary medicine continue to be administered and, before long, we will need to deal with their side effects. For now, most of those effects are invisible and could indeed remain latent for a long time. Still, their threat may be as ominous as that posed by the financial crisis itself.

To understand this threat, we need to look at where we stand historically. If we leave aside the war-impacted years of 1942 to 1946, the largest annual deficit the United States has incurred since 1920 was 6 percent of gross domestic product. This fiscal year, though, the deficit will rise to about 13 percent of G.D.P., more than twice the non-wartime record. In dollars, that equates to a staggering $1.8 trillion. Fiscally, we are in uncharted territory.

Because of this gigantic deficit, our country’s “net debt” (that is, the amount held publicly) is mushrooming. During this fiscal year, it will increase more than one percentage point per month, climbing to about 56 percent of G.D.P. from 41 percent. Admittedly, other countries, like Japan and Italy, have far higher ratios and no one can know the precise level of net debt to G.D.P. at which the United States will lose its reputation for financial integrity. But a few more years like this one and we will find out.

An increase in federal debt can be financed in three ways: borrowing from foreigners, borrowing from our own citizens or, through a roundabout process, printing money. Let’s look at the prospects for each individually — and in combination.

The current account deficit — dollars that we force-feed to the rest of the world and that must then be invested — will be $400 billion or so this year. Assume, in a relatively benign scenario, that all of this is directed by the recipients — China leads the list — to purchases of United States debt. Never mind that this all-Treasuries allocation is no sure thing: some countries may decide that purchasing American stocks, real estate or entire companies makes more sense than soaking up dollar-denominated bonds. Rumblings to that effect have recently increased.

Then take the second element of the scenario — borrowing from our own citizens. Assume that Americans save $500 billion, far above what they’ve saved recently but perhaps consistent with the changing national mood. Finally, assume that these citizens opt to put all their savings into United States Treasuries (partly through intermediaries like banks).

Even with these heroic assumptions, the Treasury will be obliged to find another $900 billion to finance the remainder of the $1.8 trillion of debt it is issuing. Washington’s printing presses will need to work overtime.

Slowing them down will require extraordinary political will. With government expenditures now running 185 percent of receipts, truly major changes in both taxes and outlays will be required. A revived economy can’t come close to bridging that sort of gap.

Legislators will correctly perceive that either raising taxes or cutting expenditures will threaten their re-election. To avoid this fate, they can opt for high rates of inflation, which never require a recorded vote and cannot be attributed to a specific action that any elected official takes. In fact, John Maynard Keynes long ago laid out a road map for political survival amid an economic disaster of just this sort: “By a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens.... The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose.”

I want to emphasize that there is nothing evil or destructive in an increase in debt that is proportional to an increase in income or assets. As the resources of individuals, corporations and countries grow, each can handle more debt. The United States remains by far the most prosperous country on earth, and its debt-carrying capacity will grow in the future just as it has in the past.

But it was a wise man who said, “All I want to know is where I’m going to die so I’ll never go there.” We don’t want our country to evolve into the banana-republic economy described by Keynes.

Our immediate problem is to get our country back on its feet and flourishing — “whatever it takes” still makes sense. Once recovery is gained, however, Congress must end the rise in the debt-to-G.D.P. ratio and keep our growth in obligations in line with our growth in resources.

Unchecked carbon emissions will likely cause icebergs to melt. Unchecked greenback emissions will certainly cause the purchasing power of currency to melt. The dollar’s destiny lies with Congress.

The heart of what has become in some places shouting matches and unruly crowds are genuine intense concern and personal feelings people have about their own healthcare. There is nothing manufactured about that. As we repeatedly hear, healthcare represents about one sixth of our national economy. Thus the stakes are high and everyone wants to get any changes right. There should not be a rush to just get something done. Good public policy must require some study of what we believe the costs are and the results. With the White House’s ever changing position it seems the President just wants to pass “something” (which I believe he eventually will (no matter how hollow)) and hold it up as an achievement.

This post was not supposed to be about the healthcare debate (that is way too complicated) but before moving back to Listening, I’ll simply add the essential debate is between making healthcare affordable or creating another national entitlement.

The stage for the outrage at public meetings was set because of public sentiment and outrage over the unfunded stimulus package passed last February and the President’s and Democrats adopted budget that includes adding 1.8 Trillion to the deficit. Remember the Tax Day Tea Parties? They were a precursor of public opinion on healthcare.

Without question attendance and participation at many of the events we have seen on television and the internet were organized by those who oppose the Democrat version of healthcare reform. Of course this is core of political freedom and has much to do with what America is about. For some to suggest that this is anti American or Nazi tactics is completely wrong headed. If you don’t like the message shoot the messenger.

Political analyst Juan Williams hit the nail on the head when he said it depends who is protesting. If it was against the War in Viet Nam or the Reverend Dr. King then it’s ok. If it’s against healthcare reform then it’s Nazi tactics. Williams added that President Obama was a community organizer and whose job it was to get people to attend public meetings to protest government policy (in this case the City of Chicago).

I have organized several political events and it requires determination and focus. It is hard work. But success only comes when people are interested and motivated. You just don’t say lets go see the Congresswoman and talk about healthcare. While unfortunately rowdy, I saw people at these events who were not acting. They are concerned, scared and very real.

It is too bad that some of our Senators and Representatives have chosen to avoid these meetings.
The Manson Family is back in the news.

Yesterday Squeaky Fromme (whom the New York Times dignifies by referring to her repeatedly as Ms. Fromme or Lynette A Fromme) was released from Federal prison custody for her 1975-attempted assassination of President Jerry Ford. The Squeekster was a member of the (now) legendary Manson Family who carried out the Tate-La Bianca murder of 9 people in Hollywood in 1969.

While Squeaky’s parole has been expected an unexpected and far stranger story about Manson also appeared recently. Manson however will not see the outside of a cell in his lifetime.

Coincidentally sharing Manson’s digs at one of the Hotel California’s location is none other than music producer legend Phil Spector. Spector is cooling his heels for about 19 years for the murder for actress Linda Clarkson. According to Spector’s wife Rachelle, Phil told her in a telephone call that he received a note from prison mate Manson. Manson told Spector he wanted to meet with him to discuss his musical career. Reportedly the note said, “Come over to my house.”

Manson had always harbored the desire for a musical career. The Family murdered mistakenly murdered Sharon Tate and others who were staying at a home being rented from another record producer Terry Melcher (the husband of actress Doris Day.) Manson sent his “Family” to Melcher’s home to murder Melcher after he had refused to help Manson.

Rachelle Spector reported that Phil told her he was “creeped out.” Spector also told his wife, 'I used to pick up the phone and it was John Lennon of Celine Dion or Tina Turner, and now Charles Manson is trying to get a hold of me."
