J.B. Mauney scored 89.75 points on Chester to win the first round of the Professional Bull Riders World Finals on
Friday night.

Mauney, who entered the eight-round event ranked No. 3 in the season standings, rode just before second-ranked Guilherme Marchi was bucked off in 3.4 seconds on Monkey Blood.

Defending world champ Marchi is trying to become the first rider to win the title in consecutive years in the 16-year-old event.

This year, Marchi headed into the Thomas & Mack Center trailing leader Kody Lostroh by 294.75 points.

Before being bucked off Friday, Marchi had covered his last seven bulls and 14 of his last 15 for a 93.3 percent average.

Lostroh, who has held the top spot in the standings for the previous 20 events, had an 83.5-point ride on Chester to close out the round.

Josh Koschel finished second Friday night with an 89.25 on Bad Moon, Travis Briscoe was third with an 88.75 on Little Juicy.
