Steve Hemmingsen
While I retired from my daily duties here at KELOLAND in May of 2000, I'm still active in the affairs of the station; showing up for free staff lunches, distracting people from their labors in "my" newsroom, and occasionally working. My latest ventures include writing a column for KELOLAND.com called "Weighing In". I ponder serious topics like the Janklow trial and less serious ones reflecting on such things as Christmas during my youth in Morgan, Minnesota, where I grew up. I knew I had "arrived" as a writer when Bernie Hunhoff asked if he could reprint one of my ramblings next spring in his South Dakota Magazine.
This is ideal. I can do it on my home computer, even at the lake, without having to shave or "dress appropriately." Look for these meanderings, ponderings and occasional rants to take on a Jimmy Buffett style during the lake-sodden summer months. I will also be involved in KELOLAND's political coverage where I will have to probably dress appropriately. I dress appropriately for First Monday, usually on the first monday of each month.
Is retirement boring? Never. If I'm not at the lake, I'm shuttling cars for a rental company, doing my woodbutchering, trying to look "cool yet common" in my pickup truck, and doing the occasional speech if my price doesn't dissuade the one making the invitation.
I have two children, ages 40 and 29.
