South Dakota officials warn people not to be fooled by the slowdown in snowfall. They say a large winter storm is still expected to hit the state.

During a briefing Thursday morning, they announced plans are being made in case conditions force them to close the interstates. At this point, they expect to have to close Interstate 29 from Iowa to North Dakota sometime Thursday evening. They say Interstate 90 from Minnesota west will also likely be closed. But right now, they don't know when or how far west it will be shut to traffic.

The state says there are 4,000 people without power because of the storm. The biggest problems are in Mellette and Todd Counties. Crews hope to have power restored by Thursday afternoon.

While snowfall is slow now, KELOLAND Meteorologist Brian Karstens says it will pick up as the day goes on. Heavy snow is expected overnight and strong winds are in the forecast for Christmas Day.
