State Rep. Tom Deadrick says he will seek the Republican nomination for South Dakota secretary of state.

The 57-year-old from Platte is in his fourth term in the state Legislature. He has served previously as speaker of the House. He is a former dentist, and a practicing attorney and abstracter.

Secretary of State Chris Nelson is seeking the GOP nomination for the right to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

Other GOP candidates for Nelson's job include state Sen. Jason Gant, Sioux Falls, and current Deputy Secretary of State Teresa Bray, of Pierre. The sole Democratic candidate is state Sen. Ben Nesselhuf, of Vermillion.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
In a story December 3 about State Representative Tom Deadrick, the Associated Press erroneously reported he was in his second year as the speaker of the House. Deadrick is no longer House speaker.
