After Lawrence County commissioners denied their request for a permit, backers of a feedlot north of Spearfish are seeking a permit from the state.

Two Tone Cattle Co. had asked the county to allow a feedlot large enough for 4,000 cattle. After county commissioners denied the request, the company has made some changes and has taken its request to the state.

The latest proposal seeks a permit for 999 cattle.  Owner Bart Krautschun said he's trying to make it "work for
everybody."

County commissioners are working on a new feedlot ordinance they hope to present next month.
