When it comes to seasonal predictions, finding what will influence our weather pattern for the next several months is crucial. While some years it's easy and the pattern jumps out at you, other years -- like this year -- it takes a little more research.

One of the first places we look is the Pacific Ocean. If the water is cool, we can expect a la nina winter pattern. If it's warmer, el nino.

The ocean temperatures influence the jet stream, which in turn has an effect on weather around the globe. This year is looking like we'll see an el nino pattern.  We've had 18 of them since 1951 and about 75 percent of the time that means above average temperatures.

You also have to factor in our cooler than average summer.  That too can have an impact.  And what about our wet and cool October? What affect , if any, will it have?

These are just examples of what I've been looking at as I put finishing touches on my snowfall prediction.  I'll have it out Thursday.
