If your destination is southern or western Sioux Falls, getting there from here won't be easy. A busy intersection on the city's south side has traffic at a near stand still.

New traffic lights at 49th and Western are intended to improve traffic flow in this busy part of town. But until that happens, motorists may want to steer-clear of this intersection until the work is complete.

Construction crews closed down the intersection Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. before the morning rush hour.

While traffic along 49th Street has been diverted away from this intersection, traffic is still flowing in both directions along Western Avenue.

Northbound traffic off of 49th Street is being detoured to Kiwanis Avenue. Southbound traffic should take Elmwood Avenue next to the city garage site.

The best advice may be to simply avoid 49th Street for the next two days or until the work on Western Avenue is complete.

The intersection at 49th and Western is expected to reopen sometime before Friday morning, weather permitting.
