Clinics across South Dakota have seen thousands of people come through their doors. The state's supply of H1N1 vaccine has been significantly stronger than demand.
The state health department is working to get the H1N1 vaccine to your door. In fact, clinics in seven communities vaccinated more than 3,000 children, pregnant women and day care providers this week. But it's how much of the vaccine they didn't give out that's even more surprising.
Sioux Falls invited 2,300 day care children and their providers to Thursday's H1N1 vaccine clinic. The city received 2,000 doses but just 978 people showed up.
The Vermillion H1N1 Clinic was given nearly 1,500 doses but only 460 people were vaccinated.
And in Watertown, 1,200 doses of the vaccine were available, but only 620 doses were given out.
That's more than 2,000 doses that went unused. But the vaccine isn't going to waste. What's left over will be shipped to another site or scheduled clinic to keep vaccinations going.
